You would have to go under general anesthesia and then endure weeks, maybe even months, of down time. The old liposuction was more about debulking rather than shaping. With new advances in technique and technology, we can now perform liposuction under local anesthesia and you can walk out of the procedure and go back to your normal activities as soon as the next day. With these techniques, the results can be significantly superior to the results with the old school liposuction.

Tumescent anesthesia.
One of the biggest advances in liposuction is the use of a technique called tumescent anesthesia. Instead of putting the patient under general anesthesia, we take IV fluid and add a numbing agent called lidocaine and a medication called epinephrine to constrict the blood vessels with some sodium bicarbonate to buffer the pH of the solution. This solution is gently infused into the area to be treated. The solution diffuses into the fatty tissue and completely numbs the treatment area. This allows the doctor to work on getting your fat out and sculpting your body with no pain. Most patients choose to be wide awake and are having conversations with the doctor and the OR staff throughout the procedure. Being awake means we can stand you up to see how the treatment is coming along and make adjustments on the spot if we need too. Being awake means no risk of blood clots from lying in the same position and it means you don’t have to worry about not eating anything before or after the procedure. You can have a light breakfast or lunch before you come.

Power assisted liposuction.
One of the technologies we use at Omni Aesthetics is a tool called “Vaser Lipo.” This device uses ultrasonic energy break up the fat inside your body so that the fat can be removed with smaller instruments. The vibrating motion of the Vaser Lipo allows us to shape and contour the fat as we are removing it. Because you are numbed, it does not hurt.
Skin Tightening.
One of the challenges of liposuction is that when we remove the fat, the skin deflates like a ballon and you could be left with saggy skin. We can address this problem with the help of modern technology. This is a device called Renuvion® a.k.a. J-Plasma®. Renuvion uses ionized helium gas to create an energy called “Plasma” the Plasma energy can be delivered into the liposuctioned area and stimulate the collagen and elastic tissue to tighten as we are performing the procedure. The tightening continues for months after the treatment so that you are not left with hanging skin, even after significant amounts of fat is removed.
Safety.
General anesthesia is the riskiest part of most cosmetic procedures. By performing the treatment under local anesthesia, we eliminate the risk of general anesthesia. Because we don’t need to put you under, you will not have the added cost of an anesthesiologist and hospital facility fees. The procedure is done in our outpatient facility so you also avoid the risk of hospital acquired infections. The entry sites are very small and in most cases, we do not even need to put in any stitches.
Fast Recovery.
All of our patient walk out of the office and spend the rest of the day resting. Most of our patients are back to performing all their normal activities by the second day. The bruising is minimal because the epinephrin and the laser closes down the blood vessels that typically cause bleeding during a traditional liposuction procedure.
